How to Write Wikipedia Articles

Writing Wikipedia articles is a great way to make sure that your clients get the exposure they deserve. It’s also a good way to appear knowledgeable in your chosen field. First, pick an appropriate name for your client. This is not required for articles on companies, but most people are more likely to click on something with a person’s name than just another company name. Search for any other articles that may have already been written about them before choosing this one; there’s nothing worse than creating an article.

It might be tempting to try and pick the most popular page on Wikipedia, but these can often be picked clean of information by other Wikipedians before you even get started. You should instead try and pick an article or topic that has received little attention since its creation, so no one else will have anything available to contribute besides what you write yourself. If someone does try to add information while you’re writing it, just delete their changes when you see them appear on the revision history page – don’t worry, they won’t be offended, they’ll just move on to another article.

2. Make sure that you have a reliable source for all of your information.

Wikipedia is known for its rigorous sourcing policies, and will not allow any information to be added to an article without a reliable source to back it up. This doesn’t mean that you need to track down the original author of the study or interview that you’re referencing – just make sure that the source is reputable and has been published by a reputable organization.

3. Write in an unbiased tone.

One of the most important things Wikipedia editors look for when reviewing contributions is neutrality. This means writing about your subject matter in a factual, objective manner, without inserting any personal opinions into the article. It can be hard to stay unbiased when talking about things you’re passionate about, but try your best to stick to the facts.

4. Format your article correctly.

Wikipedia articles are written in a specific format, designed to make them easy to read and understand. Make sure that you stick to this format when writing your own article, or it may be rejected by Wikipedia editors. 5. Use infoboxes where appropriate.

Infoboxes are boxes that appear at the top of an article, containing key pieces of information about the subject matter in a concise format. They are not required for all Wikipedia articles, but they can be very helpful in summarizing important information. 6. Follow Wikipedia’s guidelines for creating and editing articles.

These are all clearly laid out on the editing help page, and they’re there for a reason – to make sure that Wikipedia remains a reliable source of information. If you don’t follow these guidelines, your article might be deleted without warning, so it’s definitely worth taking the time to read through them before starting.

7. Use sources to back up your information.

When you’re writing about any kind of topic, it’s important to make sure that you have credible sources to back up your statements. The best way to do this is by citing the sources inline within the article body, using the <ref> tag. Of course, you can also just link to the source if it’s available online! Just make sure that your sources are reliable – don’t use blogs or fan sites for factual information.

8. Be aware of Wikipedia’s deletion policy.

If someone else creates an article on a topic that is similar to one you’re planning to write about, chances are high that it will be deleted as “duplicate” content. In this case, you have two options: either delete your article immediately after someone identifies this fact (ideally before they submit a deletion request), or write your article so differently from the other one as to avoid being identified as a duplicate in the first place. I recommend going with the latter option – it’ll keep your article from being deleted, and it’ll show that you’re a knowledgeable writer!

9. Polish your work before submitting it.

Make sure that you read through your article once you’ve finished writing it, and correct any mistakes that you might have made. Wikipedia is a collaborative platform, so other Wikipedians are more likely to make changes to your article if it’s not up to scratch. Spend the time to get it right, and you’ll be rewarded with a high-quality article that accurately represents your client’s work!
